The Visual Arts course provides breadth of knowledge and authentic experience. Students learn a range of media, techniques and processes that form the discipline’s foundation. They compose art work as a form of creative expression leading to greater awareness of self and the world. Students create a portfolio/ repertoire of their work as well as perform/exhibit an artistic creation. Through exploration of a variety of art works, with an emphasis on aesthetic judgment and appreciation, students understand art as an historical and cultural expression of values and as an agent of social change. Embedded in the benchmarks are the lifelong learning skills of problem-solving, communicating with mindfulness and respect, self-reflection, time management, out-of-class study and practice, and risk-taking. Reading and writing skills are developed through research, critiques and reflections.
